What is GAPS?

GAPS is an acronym for both Gut and Psychology Syndrome AND Gut and Physiology Syndrome. All GAPS illnesses begin with an imbalance of the gut microbiome.  This imbalance leads to illnesses that can manifest either psychologically or physiologically.  Some illnesses and symptoms are more severe than others but ALL are treated with the same GAPS Protocol.  The severity of the symptoms will determine the length of time on the protocol and in the healing stages of the diet.  Although many GAPS patients suffer from multiple symptoms crossing over into both syndromes, there are distinctive differences between the two.

Gut and PSYCHOLOGY Syndrome would include mental health disorders and cognitive disabilities that affect behavior such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Anxiety, Depression, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Eating Disorders, as well as any other illnesses that involve the brain.

Gut and PHYSIOLOGY Syndrome would include various physical disorders such as Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases like Asthma, Arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis, Sinusitis and Crohn’s disease, as well as Allergies, Allergic reactions, Hormonal Imbalances, Digestive Distress Disorders and any other physically debilitating illnesses.

Because all of these disorders are corrected by following the same nutritional protocol, patients suffering from both mental and physical symptoms will recover in time from illnesses associated with both syndromes.
